Hosts East Zone take on West Zone in the semi-final in the Duleep Trophy cricket tournament at Eden Gardens here on Thursday. North meet holders Central in the other semi-final in Guwahati.

Gujarat earn draw
AHMEDABAD:
A tenacious unbeaten knock of 57 by Parthiv Patel helped Gujarat deny Mumbai an outright victory in the West Zone Vijay Merchant match today. Mumbai earned five points for their first innings lead.
Brief scores: Mumbai 230 amp; 170-7 decl V Indulkar 42 not out, Jagdish Patel 3-43 drew Gujarat 109 amp; 132-2 Parthiv Patel 57 not out.

Mukherjea8217;s fate
MUMBAI:
Jaideep Mukherjea8217;s fate as Davis Cup captain will be decided at the annual general meeting of All India Tennis Association here on Dec 26. The AGM will alsoappoint a selection committee. Meanwhile, Mukherjea will organise a US 25,000 Challenger at CCI from Feb 28-March 4.

Wrestler dead
VARANASI:
International wrestler Laxmikant Pandey died at Sir Sunder Lal Hospital on Monday. He was 70. Lal represented India in the 1956 Olympics and won a gold medal in the 1958 Commonwealth Games.

CV Rao8217;s bow out
HYDERABAD:
Defending champions CV Rao and last year runner-up Sunil Machhar bowed out of the 41st National Bridge Championships team of four duplicate event today. 16 teams advanced to the pre-quarter-finals.

Shuttle academy

The UP Badminton Academy will shortly come up at a 10-acre land donated by the Lucknow Development Authority. SAI and the Central Government will provide financial assistance for the Rs 9-crore venture.
