Abhinn Shyam drubbed in final

BANGALORE: Abhinn Shyam Gupta of India was drubbed in straight by top seed Rio Suryana of Australia in the finals of the Australian Olympic test event in Sydney. According to reports reaching Badminton Association of India BAI, Rio whipped the Indian 15-6 15-6. Abhinn, who had a fine run in this tournament looked sluggish, but his opponent definitely played a superior game yesterday. He now moves on to Wellington to play New Zealand International.

Azhar for Dowla

HYDERABAD: Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin will lead Hyderabad in the All-India Moin-Ud-Dowla Invitation Gold Cup cricket tournament here from September 10-17.

Inter-city cricket

NEW DELHI: A six-city cricket tournament for Under-16 schoolboysis planned in the second edition of the Pepsi Youth Cup this year. The series will be played in Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Calcutta. A 14-member team will be selected after the intra-city final from each city. Former Test players Shivlal Yadav, Roger Binny, K Srikkanth and Saba Karim will supervise the series.

IHF gets sponsor

MUMBAI: The Indian Hockey Federation IHF, the Taj Group of Hotels and Tata Tea today signed over a million-rupee sponsorship deal that will boost Indian Junior and Senior teams in its preparations for World Cup and Sydney Olympics respectively. The sponsoring companies have promised further help if needed to groom about 150 juniors.
