Patel’s academy

BANGALORE: Former Test cricketer Brijesh Patel, who parted ways after running a cricket academy with former state cricketer Imtiaz Ahmed, has decided to launch a separate cricket academy with former Test star Gundappa Vishwanath as consultant.

Speaking to newsmen, Patel said he had to reconsider his decision following pressure from parents, boys and coaches. He had parted ways citing lack of time due to business committments as reason for withdrawing from the earlier academy.

VIJAYAWADA: Chetan P Baboor (Petroleum Sports Control Board) and Kasturi Chakraborty (Railways) head the TTFI ranking for 1997, according to S M Sultan, joint secretary, Table Tennis Federation of India.

The other rankings are: Men: 2 S Raman (PSCB), 3 Arup Basak (PSCB), 4 Arjun Dutta (PSCB), 5 Sunil Babras (BSCB).

Women: 2 N R Indu (BSCB), 3 Anindita Chakraborthy (Rlys), 4 M S Mythili (PSCB), 5 Montu Ghosh (Railways).

TN champs

CHANGANACHERRY: Tamil Nadu with 52 points and Kerala with 62 points emerged the men’s and women’s champions respectively of the All India Federation Cup powerlifting championship here today.

While Kerala men (47 points) came second, Madhya Pradesh women were the runner-up with 24 points.

V Lognathan of Tamil Nadu and Rajarajeswari of Andhra Pradesh were the individual champions. Six new national records were set on the last day of the meet today.

Doshi in final

MUMBAI: Parth Doshi defeated Kenny Ng 3-9, 9-5, 9-1, 9-0 in the semi-finals of theunder-19 junior boys’ event at the Sportexel Milo Junior Open in Kuala Lumpur today.

Doshi plays Malaysia’s Aaron Soyza in the final.
