Sandhu scheme

MUMBAI: Former Test seamer Balwinder Singh Sandhu has initiated a novel scheme Arpan8217; to extend financial support to the cricket groundsmen by earmarking an amount from the proceeds of his benefit match held last year.

Sandhu is to contribute Rs 35,000 this year to groundsman Jagdish Jaiswal of Dadar Parsi Colony Ground in Matunga in central Mumbai, he said in a release.

Ganguly8217;s gesture

CALCUTTA: Saurav Ganguly today donated a sum of Rs 7.01 lakh as sale proceeds from two exhibition matches as also from sale of bats and implements held in Siliguri for the armed forces to the West Bengal Chief Minister Relief Fund.

Skating record

NEW DELHI: Meerut8217;s Ayus Jain, 7, has set a world record for his age by skating 85 minutes non-stop on ice, the Uttar Pradesh Roller Skating Federation claimed.

Ayush finished a series of skill tests at the Fun And Fair Sports Complex here on August 11, a federation release said.

National Boxing

NEW DELHI: The 46thNational Boxing Championship scheduled to be held at Simla has been advanced to be conducted from October 12-17.

The dates for the championship, originally scheduled from October 29 to November 3, has been shifted due to the change in the dates of the Asian meet which is scheduled to be held from October 23-31.

NEW DELHI: A 10-member Indian squad, including five girls, will take part in the Asian Schools Tennis Championship to be held at Jakarta from September 24-27.

Baliwala dead

MUMBAI: Cycling international and bronze medallist at the first Asian Cycling Championship Japan, 1961 Jimmy R Baliwala died on Thursday. He was 58 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
