MUMBAI: Former captain Polly Umrigar was chosen for the CK Nayudu award for 98-99. The award consists a trophy and Rs two lakh. Umrigar played 59 Tests in 14 years. He made 3631 runs 12 centuries, 14 half-tons. He also took 35 wickets 42.08. He captained in eight Tests. 8220;I am thankful to the BCCI for bestowing upon me this honour for my contribution to cricket both on and off the field for the past fifty years8221;, Umrigar said.

Saurav Ganguly auctions prized bat

SILIGURI: Saurav Ganguly auctioned the bat and kit used in his famous 183-run knock in the Taunton match of the World Cup to raise funds for the army personnel who died during the Kargil conflict. The bat and the kit fetched Rs 1,11,000. Fifteen other bats, signed by Ganguly, were auctioned for Rs 2,60,500 with one bat fetching Rs 31,000.

Deepali Anvekar lone Indian survivor

MUMBAI: Top junior girl Deepali Anvekar was the lone Indian to survive on the opening day of the 10th World JuniorSquash Championship at Antwerp on Sunday. The Mumbai girl defeated Nathalie Suhas of France 9-0 9-0 9-7 in 21 minutes. Chennai-based Pia Abraham went down 8-10 5-9 4-9 in 21 minutes to New Zealand No 1 Kylie Lindsay, while Supriya Balsekar lost to South African Karen Westhuizen 0-9 0-9 2-9 in 14 minutes. Vaidehi Reddy was also ousted in the first round, by American Michelle Quibell, 2-9 2-9 4-9.

Women8217;s team for World Wrestling

NEW DELHI: Indian women wrestlers will be appearing in an international event for the first time when a 10-member squad takes part in the Sub-Junior World Championships to be held in Poland from August 3-7. The Sub-Junior World Championships are being held for boys8217; and girls8217; aged between 15 to 17 years.
