
Sharjah loss claims a life
MEERUT: The dismissal of the Indian batsmen one after another against Pakistan in the final at Sharjah was too much for an aged cricket fan, who suffered a fatal heart attack here on Friday.
The 62-year-old Yogendra Dogra, who was watching the final on television, was distressed when Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin fell to paceman Shoaib Akhtar cheaply. Dogra, who collapsed, was rushed to a nearby nursing home, but was declared dead on arrival.
Spin to England
HYDERABAD: Fresh from his highly successful Ranji Trophy season, Hyderabad off-spinner Kanwaljit Singh has bagged a contract to play in the Bradford league in England.
Kanwaljit, who bagged 51 wickets for Hyderabad this season, will play for Cleackheaton Sports Club.
Team burgled
BHADRACHALAM: In an unfortunate incident the Karnataka women8217;s cricket team lost Rs 20,000 worth gold ornaments and other belongings on Saturday when some burglars broke into their cottages during the all-Indiatournament here today. Dr Sateesh Paulra, sponsor of the tourney, made a nice gesture and presented the team a cheque of Rs 10,000.
SAFF Cup riches
COLOMBO: The six-nation SAFF Coca Cola Cup, to be played at Goa from April 22 to May one, carries a total prize money of 1,00,000 dollars. While the champions get to walk away with half the amount, the runners-up would receive 25,000 dollars. Teams finishing third and fourth win 15,000 and 10,000 dollars respectively, a South Asian Football Federation release said today.
The man of each of the 10 matches and the most valuable player of the tournament will get a special prize of Rs 25,000.
BSF beat TFA
HALDIA: Border Security Force BSF blanked Tata Football Academy TFA 3-0 to move into the final round while Bloodmouth of Tripura held Calcutta Port Trust CPT to a 1-1 draw in Group C matches of the second division National Football League here today.
Defender Mobi Singh, striker Gouranga Pal and midfielder Prasanta Das scored for BSF.Santanu Chakrabarty scored for CPT, while Sudipto Chowdhury equalised for Bloodmouth.

GUNTUR: Badminton Association of India BAI for the first time in the history of the game has earmarked a total prize money of Rs 48 lakh for various domestic tournaments to be played in different parts of the country. Briefing newsmen, BAI joint secretary Punnaiah Choudary said he would accompany the Indian team as manager for the World Badminton Championship.
