Gavaskar to miss benefit match
Mumbai:
After Saurav Ganguly pulled out of the match between the 1983 World Cup team against the 1999 World Cup-bound team, Sunil Gavaskar and all-rounder Ravi Shastri too have pulled out. Gavaskar has cited health reasons for missing the match while Shastri, like Ganguly, has said he is going to miss the match due to personal reasons. The match is being labelled as a `Good Luck India’ match and will also help the families of two former cricketers the late Raman Lamba and the ailing Ramnath Parkar by giving them Rs 20 lakh each.

Giant bat
New Delhi:
A consumer durable giant unveiled what it claimed the world’s largest wooden bat at National Stadium here to derive maximum mileage for its products from the passion for cricket.

To unveil the bat that stands 50 feet tall and six feet wide, the company roped in two former cricketers, Madan Lal and Roger Binny, who were a part of team that won the World Cup in 1983.

The blade of the bat has a dimension of33.5 feet and its handle is 16.5 feet long.

Cricket fans would have the chance to pen messages of good wishes for the Indian cricket team on the bat. The company hopes to collect a few thousand such messages.

Mini tennis
Bangalore:
A record number of over 300 entries had been received for the All India Tennis Association Mini/Sub junior tennis tournament beginning at the Sadashivanagar Club from April 19.

Briefing newsmen on the six-day event here last night, tournament director Sunil Yajaman said another 100 were expected to sign in before the qualifying rounds. The tournament, carrying a scholarship money of Rs 50,000, will be for boys and girls under 14 and 16 years.

New Delhi:
The Delhi High Court adjourned till Monday the hearing of Stracon India Pvt Ltd petition seeking to restrain Doordarshan (DD) from stopping the telecast of programmes and promotional advertisements relating to the World Cup cric ket 1999. Justice Dalveer Bhandari had given the two parties 24hours time to resolve the dispute through negotiations but they failed to arrive at a settlement.

TFA move ahead
Haldia:
Tata Football Academy (TFA) edged out Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) 2-1 to move into the Super Six round of the 2nd Division National Football League here today.

The Calcutta outfit began well but the youthful TFA upped the ante after the break scoring through Alex Amrose (47th minute) and Jahir Abbas (65th min). CPT’s Jayanta Chakraborty scored a consolation goal. Gouranga Pal’s goaltook BSF past Nongthimai 1-0 in the day’s other match.
