Indian team on Thursday

MUMBAI: The Indian cricket team for the first Test match against Pakistan would be selected in New Delhi on January 21, according to the Indian cricket board secretary Jaywant Lele.

The first match of the two Test series is to be held at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from January 28.

The Pakistan team led by Wasim Akram is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Thursday.

Supriya axed

MUMBAI: Supriya Balsekar of Mumbai has been dropped from the Kuala Lumpur-bound Indian junior girls team scheduled to participate in the Asian Junior Squash Championship from January 24 to 31.

According to information received here today, the Mumbai lass was replaced by V Reddy of Chennai after the former lost to the latter in a play-off. The other members of the team are Joshna Chinappa and Ria Ibrahim both from Chennai and Rhea Bhandari Mumbai.

Eight qualify

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu8217;s S Marutha, Vandana Murali, Kavya Krishnakumar, P Nithya, Sumitha Festus, PreethiDevendran, M Sunitha and V Meenakshi have qualified for the main draw of the under-18 girls singles event in the Krishnan Training Centre KTC All India Tennis Association AITA Junior Tennis Championship here today.

The main draw of the tournament begins tomorrow.

CHENNAI: With the absence of top stars Nitin Mongia, Ashim Mongia and Naresh Yadav there would be a keen tussle for supremacy among the upcoming sailors in the Coastal National Laser Championship 1999 to be held at the Royal Madras Yacht Club from tomorrow to January 23.

As many as 54 sailors, including Sandeep Srikant of Chennai, who represented India in the World Youth Championship in South Africa, former National champion R Mahesh, Gautam Dutta in the laser class, reigning champion RajeshChaudhary in laser radial class and National champion Varun Prabhakar in the optimist class, would be vying for honours.
