Wills Trophy from Jan 11

NEW DELHI: Board President8217;s XI will take on Delhi Guwahati, Bengal face Tamil Nadu Calcutta and Madhya Pradesh play Wills XI Agartala in the three quarter-finals of the Wills Trophy to be held at East Zone from January 11 to 17. Last year8217;s winners Mumbai have been given a bye into the semi-finals. The semi-finals, to be played on January 14, will be held at Jamshedpur and Cuttack while the final, slated for January 17, will be played at Calcutta.

Sweep by India

NEW DELHI: Vikrant Sane won the boys title while Sasha Abraham took the honour in the girls when they won their respective finals in the under-13 ITF South Asia tennis tournament being held in Colombo. Both finals were all-India affairs where Sane defeated DS Bhusari in straight sets 6-3 6-1 in the boy8217;s and Sasha made short work of Ankita Bhambri to record a 6-3 6-3 win on the distaff side.

Natekar to lead

MUMBAI: Former Indian Davis Cupper Gaurav Natekar of Pune and K Janaki of Mumbaiwould lead the Maharashtra State men8217;s and women8217;s tennis teams respectively at the National Games to be held at Imphal from Feb 15-20.

THALASSERY: Defending champion Pallavi Shah is expected to take part in theNational junior girls chess championship which commences here on Wednesday.

Over 30 players including the new International Woman Master Swati Ghate of Maharashtra, International Woman Master Nisha Mohota and Swati Mohota of West Bengal have already confirmed their participation. Tamil Nadu8217;s S Meenakshi who was the runner-up last year is not likely to take part this year.
