Kanetkar, Anuj Gupta crash out

MUMBAI: Nikhil Kanetkar and Anuj Gupta, the only Indians to progress into the second round last night, lost their third round matches in the Singapore Open Grand Prix badminton tournament.

According to the information received here, Kanitkar lost to fourth seeded Malaysian Ong Ewe Hock 5-15, 5-15 while Gupta, after a superb fight in the opening match, went down to third seeded Chinese Luo Yigang 14-17, 3-15.

Neelima Choudhary and Divya Ramesh crashed to their rivals in the first round.

Shocking error

NEW DELHI: A typing error gave tense moments to India’s former hockey fullback Rajinder Singh who found his name missing from the list of Arjuna Awardees announced yesterday.

Rajinder had received a communication from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in the ministry of Human Resource Development informing him about his selection, but was aghast to find his name not in the list published in the newspapers today.

The list, circulated to the mediayesterday, did not have his name which led to the confusion. However, the department issued a correction today, much to the relief of of the 40-year Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach.

Ferreira frets

MUMBAI: Indian coach Michael Ferreira today felt much relieved when he and his two-member team of Ashok Shandilya and Devendra Joshi received their visas for Pakistan where India is scheduled to take part in the Asian Snooker championship scheduled at Karachi from August 15.

They leave tomorrow but Ferreira was most upset that the Indians were left on tenderhooks for last 15 days.

Hockey camp

NEW DELHI: The four-member selection committee, headed by Ajitpal Singh, shortlisted 22 players at the end of Independence Gold Cup hockey tournament here, for a special assessment camp to be conducted by the Sports Authority of India.

The boys will be then inducted to various SAI hostels on the basis of their skills with SAI taking care of their needs, including education.

Arjun two under

NEW DELHI: Arjun Singh fresh from his win in the Indian season opener, Wills Masters, shot a two under 70 in the first round of the $ 200,000 Volvo Masters in Kuala Lumpur on the Omega APGA Tour. His team-mate, Firoz Ali, second in the Order of merit, went one-under for 71.

Thailand’s Boonchu Ruangkit unable to complete his round due to a three and a half hour rain delay, was in a strong position at six under for the tournament with two holes to play and leads by a stroke.
