
Five-member squad for u-16 Chess Olympiad
CHENNAI: India will be represented by five under-16 players in the sixth World Childrens Chess Olympiad scheduled at Istanbul Turkey from August 20-31.
The tournament, in which 100 teams from fide-affiliated countries are expected to participate, is being patronised by world champion Anatoly Karpov, who has been helping children8217;s chess for some years now. Karpov, an ambassador of the Unicef, is also the president of the Board of World Children Chess.
The Indians to participate are: P Karikrishna Andhra Pradesh, MR Venkatesh Tamil Nadu, Prathamesh Mokal Maharashtra, Akashdeep Haryana and Gillford Thangkiew Meghalaya.
FC Kochin storms into final
KANNUR: Formidable FC Kochin scored a convincing 4-0 win over Integral Coach Factory ICF Chennai, and stormed into the finals of the South Zone Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup Football Tournament here today.
The winners led 1-0 at half-time.
Kochin, who had the upper hand, forgedahead in the 45th minute through captain Danesh8217;s header. Star striker Abu Jomo, who played as a mid-fielder in the match, struck the second goal in the 54th minute while medio Noel Wilson consolidated their lead in the 79th minute. Substitute Naushad rounded off the tally in injury time.
Top stars for Modipon Bridge
NEW DELHI: Leading bridge players of the country will vie for top honours in the Modipon Gold Cup Bridge Tournament starting here on August 6.
The four-day tournament, being staged under the aegis of Bridge Federation of India BFI and billed as the highest prize money event in its category, will have at stake cash prizes worth Rs 3.10 lakh, a release today said.
The winning team will take home a purse of Rs one lakh while the runners-up will get Rs 50,000. The third and fourth place teams will receive an award of Rs 25,000 each.
The winners in the pairs section will pocket Rs 15,000 and the runners-up, Rs 10,000.
