
Three bronze for India
NEW DELHI: India bagged three bronzes in Taekwon-do at the on going World Youth Games at Moscow.
Indian schoolboys, Partik Anand won the bronze in the Pattern Event as team-mates Tushar Chandra and Parul Chowdhary got the medals in Sparing.Children from 136 countries are taking part in 15 disciplines including athletics, swimming, gymnastics, soccer and tennis.
Twenty seven countries had fielded entrants in Taekwon-do where India is participating, team coach Balan Rajendran said.
Gopi chand likely for BPL tournament
HYDERABAD: National champion Pullela Gopi Chand is on the road to recovery and will in all probability play in the BPL Academy tournament which begins in Bangalore on July 19.
Gopi Chand who, in the Indian Grand Prix tournament at Mumbai, sustained an injury to his knee, expressed surprise at his being top seeded in the Asian Satellite tournament now being held in Chennai. 8220;I had never confirmed my participation in this tournament,8221; saidhe.
No Govt funds for badminton camp
CHENNAI: The possibility of the Indian badminton team not making it to the Commonwealth Games looms large with the Government yet to allot funds even for the training camp scheduled to be held at Bangalore from Aug 1 to 31.
Badminton Association of Indian Secretary L C Gupta said that it will be an injustice if the team is not cleared for the second time running. At a time when the Indians are exposed to so many tournaments in India and abroad, the participation in Commonwealth Games is imperative for the Indians, Gupta felt.
Asian Satellite live on Doordarshan
NEW DELHI: Doordarshan will telecast Live the finals of the Asian Satellite badminton tournament from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, on July 17.
The telecast, beginning at 1500 hours, will be available on DD-2 and the regional service of Chennai Doordarshan Kendra, a release said here today.
15 teams for Murugappa trophy
CHENNAI: Fifteen top state and institutional teamswill be seen in action in the 76th All India MCC Murugappa Hockey tournament for the Independence Cup, starting here from July 16.
The teams: Group A: Indian Railways, Air India, CRPF, All India Customs and Central Excise.
Group B: Punjab, Indian Airlines and Karnataka.
Group C: Services, Punjab and Sind Bank, Mumbai and Gujarat.
Group D: Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Food Corporation and IHF Colts.
