Mumbai team clinch thriller

PUNE: Sangli District brought off a stunning upset accounting for defending champions Nagpur District 39-33 in a pulsating tussle in the boys section of the 48th Maharashtra State Inter-District Basketball Championship for under-18 which got under way at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City Mahalunge-Balewadi near here on Monday.

The winners spearheaded by the sharp shooting duo of Subajeet Kadam 8 and Mahesh Nagne, who harassed the rival defence time and again. Nagpur cagers however regained their rhythm and fluency only after the breather and bridged the gap through Jaideep Pundkar 10 and Ananth Jadhav 8.

In a Group B league tie Mumbai Central clinched a thrilling 40-31 win after leading 21-5 at the half way stage. M Vinod 14 and Vinit Patil 19 were the main scorers for the Mumbai team while Deepak Kapoor 15 reduced the margin for the losers.

Mumbai North made short work of Kolhapur District 53-21 after having taken a match winning lead of 34-18 at the break ina Group C league tie. Kiran Deokule 11 and Ralph Gomes 10 played stellar roles for the winners while Nazie Jamdar 15 was outstanding for the loser.

Asia-Pacific Golf

NEW DELHI: Junior National champion Shiv Kumar and seasoned Sandeep Sayal will spearhead the Indian challenge against a strong field in the boy8217;s section of the Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championships which will tee-off at the Jack Nicklaus designed Springfield Royal Country Club course in Bangkok tomorrow.

Shiv Kumar and Sayal would comprise the Group quot;Aquot; team while National sub-junior champion Ashok Kumar and Harshvardhan Baid will constitute the quot;Bquot; group, according to an Indian Golf Union release. In the girl8217;s section, National ladies and girls champion Parnita Garewal would lead the team which will also include Ayesha Kapoor, Irina Brar and Pragya Misra.
