Ratti champ; Kanetkar makes final

Bangalore: Sachin Ratti lifted the men8217;s singles title of the New Zealand International badminton championships, upsetting top seed and world number 23 Rio Suryana of Australia 5-15, 15-4, 15-10, according to reports received at the Badminton Association of India BAI. This was Ratti8217;s first international title.

Manjusha Kanwar lost in the finals of the women8217;s event to Rhonda Robertson 2-11, 3-11.

Nikhil Kanetkar reached the final of the 1999 OCBC Yonex US Open in Orange Country, California. In the semi-finals, he beat Luo Xilin of China 8-15, 15-8, 17-15.

Kanetkar was down 2-8 and 8-12 in the decider before reaching match point first at 14-13. The Chinese, who was the bronze medallist in the World Junior Championships in 1994, restored parity and inched to 15-14. However, Kanetkar rallied to win 17-15.

Bury8217;s appeal

LONDON: England8217;s Bury FC has appealed to a government-appointed tribunal to allow striker Bhaichung Bhutia become the first Indianto play in the English soccer league.

Bury8217;s chairman Terry Robinson told the panel that 22-year-old Bhutia, who was picked after a week-long trial at the club, would act as a role model for young Asians.

Jeev slips to 29th

NEW DELHI: India8217;s Jeev Milkha Singh made another cut on the European PGA Tour, but slipped to be placed tied for 29th place after two rounds of the Million Euro victor Chandler British Master.
