NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 16: Abhinn Shyam Gupta at 20 has a lot of patience. He has often used this potent weapon, both in India and abroad, against his opponents to his advantage. He re-enacted the scene here in the BPL-Asian Zone qualifiers for the Thomas/ Uber Cup championships at the IG Stadium to give India the winning lead against Japan, bringing the equally patient crowd to its feet.

In the end, India won 4-1. His 100-minute toss-and-only-toss game simply wore down the 92nd ranked Kazuhiro Shimogami after India No 1 and 2, Pullela Gopi Chand and Nikhil Kanetkar, provided the fireworks showing exemplary fighting qualities.

In contrast, the Indian women could not push themselves in spite of an inspiring display put up by Aparna Popat, who upset world No 16 Lidya Djaelawijay of Indonesia, 11-5, 11-2 to give a fine start. The rest of the Indian girls just caved under pressure from the superior Indonesians to lose 1-4.

The Japanese resumed his second game as a man possessed and ran up a 6-0 lead, thanks to Gopi’s negative play. With the crowd backing Gopi to the hilt, the Indian staged a remarkable recovery from 1-9 to 10-14. Gopi saved three game points and in the extended point game, the Indian served but the return by the Japanese was long.
