ATP Tour8217;s ranking revolution
LONDON:
The current complicated men8217;s tennis rankings are to be scrapped and replaced by a 12-month Race for the World Championship, ATP Tour officials announced at Wimbledon today.

The new system, which will start in 2000, is designed to force top players to play in all the Grand Slam events and Super 9 tournaments or suffer in the rankings.

Other changes announced include taking the year-ending ATP World Championships away from Hanover and rotating it among cities around the world as well as establishing a fund to buy smaller events when they become available in order to streamline the tour.

Federation Cup
CHENNAI:
Paramjit Singh, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, Rajiv Balakrishnan and Sunita Rani achieved qualifying marks for the Asian Meet while clinching golds in their respective events on the first day of the Indian Oil Servo Fourth Federation Cup athletics meet at the modern synthetic track Nehru Stadium here today.

PT Usha emerged easy victor in the 100mdash for women. She dethroned the reigning Federation Cup champion Maharashtra8217;s Rachita Mishtri in a decisive burst in the last phase of the race. Paramjit Singh bagged gold in the men8217;s 400m run with a personal best of 46.21, bettering his own previous best of 46.80sec. Record entries
CHENNAI:
The growing popularity of the Krishna Khaitan Memorial All-India Grand Prix junior badminton tournament is best gauged by the record number of entries it has attracted for the latest edition of the competition, to be conducted by the Express Shuttle Club at the Sydenhams Road Indoor Stadium, here, from July 3 to 6.

Briefing reporters on Tuesday, organising secretary Sanjiv Sachdeva said 542 entries have been received for the 11 events as compared to 451 last year. About 280 boys and 100 girls from all over the country will be taking part in this rankingtournament.
