The Saktipur police in West Bengal Sunday detained the son of suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir from Bharatpur for allegedly assaulting the personal security officer (PSO) of his father.
Constable Jumma Khan approached the Saktipur police station and lodged a complaint against Gulam Nabi Azad, popularly known as Robin, for allegedly assaulting him after the constable sought leave to visit his home. According to the complaint, the alleged incident took place in full public view at the ground floor office of Kabir in the Saktipur police station area.
The Saktipur police visited Kabir’s residence to inquire into the matter, detained Robin and questioned him.
Speaking to the media in Berhampore, Kabir, who is also the chairman of the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP), warned the superintendent of police in Murshidabad against harassing his family, alleging political vendetta after learning that police vehicles had surrounded his house.
Kabir alleged that the PSO had misbehaved with him and his son had pushed the PSO out. “My question is how the PSO entered my personal office, whereas he stays in a separate accommodation 100 metres from my residence, and he is only to accompany me during my travels. If the police want, they can withdraw my security, but I want to know why the PSO had entered my personal office,” said Kabir, who has also filed a complaint against the PSO for alleged misbehaviour.
Kabir, who was to come to Kolkata, cancelled his plans and went to the Saktipur police station after he heard that his son had been detained. He further stated that there were CCTV cameras everywhere so that the truth would come out.
Kabir said only his son, his wife, and his daughter-in-law were present at the house. He said he would lead a gherao of the Murshidabad SP’s office in Berhampore on Thursday at 12 pm. “If the police lay hands on my son, wife or any family member, I will surround the superintendent of police’s office on Thursday. I will bring Berhampur to a standstill.”

After speaking with police officers for nearly an hour, Kabir told the media, “I informed the police that the security officer had entered without permission and stated that he wanted to go home. I asked him to leave, explaining that I could not grant him leave today. He then pursued me, and my son pushed him out.”
“They have brought my son in. I’m accustomed to such situations afte many years in politics; the police will act according to what they believe is right. I have been informed that a case is being filed against us, but it falls under bailable sections, so we will take legal action,” said Kabir before leaving for Kolkata.
