Police in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district have begun a probe after a woman accused the husband of a BJP councillor of rape, and alleged that he filmed the assault and used the video to blackmail her into silence for six months.

The accused, Ashok Singh, who is married to a BJP councillor in a Nagar Parishad in the district, was unavailable for comment.

Police also said they are verifying the veracity of a video that has come to light, purportedly showing Singh dismissing the woman’s threat of filing a complaint against him. “What will happen to me? Nothing will happen. Complain wherever you want,” he is purportedly heard saying.

According to a written complaint submitted to the Satna Superintendent of Police, Hansraj Singh, this week, the woman alleged that around six months ago, Singh entered her home, raped her at knifepoint, and recorded the assault on his mobile phone. She alleged that he threatened to kill her and her family if she spoke out.

She claimed that Singh approached her again on December 20, sexually harassed her, and demanded she comply with his wishes or face public humiliation through the release of the video. She alleged that he regularly visited her shop to verbally abuse and threaten her, creating an atmosphere of fear.

Superintendent of Police Hansraj Singh said the investigation has been transferred to the Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoj Trivedi. The police said they are verifying the authenticity of the viral video and examining all evidence.

The woman claimed she had approached the police five days ago but saw no concrete results.
