MUMBAI, NOV 22: Indian Airlines recently bowed to pressure from its biggest trade union to make alterations in its winter schedule just days after the programme was unveiled.

A total of 17 flights per week originating from Calcutta were rescheduled within seven days of their introduction after employees affiliated to the Air Corporation Employees Union in that city protested against the changes. The protestors alleged that only private airlines would benefit by the timings of certain flights in IA8217;s winter schedule.

As per the alterations made to the winter schedule, five Airbus A 320 flights departing to Bagdogra from Calcutta five days a week at 9.30 am were rescheduled for 1.50 pm on the same days. Similarly, A 300 flights to Guwahati five days a week were rescheduled for 10 am on these days instead of 2.35 pm mentioned in the original winter schedule. As a consequence to these alterations IA8217;s daily A 300 Calcutta-Mumbai flights will leave at 7.45 pm, an hour later than was slated in the winter schedule.

8220;Under the original schedule, IA flights were timed to depart Calcutta after other airlines. Not only would we have lost business, our rivals could have used our flights to accommodate their passengers in case of cancellations or over-bookings,8221; C D Soman, general secretary, ACEU told The Indian Express. Under government regulations, domestic airlines in the public and private sector have to operate a certain number of flights in the North East region at subsidised rates. Consequently there is stiff competition among airlines to fill as many seats as possible in every flight to generate maximum revenue.
