“You are all working overtime to finish democracy in this country,” was how Speaker Somnath Chatterjee reacted when the members disrupted proceedings in the Lok Sabha for the third consecutive day on Thursday.

Members belonging to the BJP, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena and Akali Dal stormed into the well of the House shouting slogans seeking a waiver of farmers’ loans. RJD members also came into the well, but to protest against the hate-campaign unleashed by the MNS against North Indians in Maharashtra.

The Speaker said: “It is a matter of great sorrow. On the one hand, you are asking for more sittings; so many notices have been given by so many honourable members. These important matters cannot be discussed.” While pointing out that a discussion on the Presidential Address is scheduled to begin from Thursday, he regretted that members were not willing to work. The only saving grace was that Finance Minister P Chidambaram was allowed to present the Economic Survey without any obstruction.
