
Bangalore, June 2: Thanks to the National Games format, which allows automatic entry for the hosts and participation of only state teams except Services, Karnataka appear determined to wrest the kabaddi gold from holders Tamil Nadu as the competition commences at the Corporation Grounds tomorrow.Studded with a bunch of internationals who formed the Bank Sports Board BSB team which won the National Kabaddi Championships at Davangere last year, Karnataka have a job on their hands with Tamil Nadu, runners-up in the kabaddi Nationals, boasting of an equally strong line-up comprising Bhaskaran, Muruganandam and A.K. Gangadharan.
Tamil Nadu captain S. Rajarethinam, who led India to a gold medal win in the 1994 Hiroshima Asiad, seemed confident of retaining the title. 8220;Haryana, Services and Karnataka are the other good teams in the fray which are likely to make it to the last four stage,8221; he added.
Karnataka coach V. Munisiddappa, on the other hand, seemed equally sure of his sides8217; chances. With players like A.K. Munivenkatappa, member of the victorious Indian team in the Hiroshima Asiad, and internationals Honnappa and B.C. Ramesh, 8220;our chances for a gold appear bright,8221; he said.
Nine teams are in the fray for the gold. Pool A includes Services, Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, while Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Rajasthan complete Pool B. The winner of Pool A will take on runner-up of Pool B, while the Pool B winner will face the Pool A runner-up in the semis.In the women8217;s section, Maharashtra, behind winners Railways in the kabaddi Nationals, start as firm favourites. They would have to face stiff challenge from the hosts in their pool, which also includes Haryana and Manipur. Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Punjab are the teams in Pool B.The matches start at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
