JAZZMAN and drummer Ranjit Barot8217;s earlier soundtrack Brides Wanted sank without a trace, but there8217;s no fear of that with Pooja Bhatt8217;s Holiday.

Expect lots of fusion and a Western sensibility. Barot8217;s brought in Karl Peters, his old friend from the Jazz Yatra days, on bass guitar and young pop saxophonist Raghav Sachar who8217;s also featured in Shantanu Moitra8217;s work.

The biggest surprise is Barot8217;s vocal talent. The same inferno you watched thrashing the skins during a jugalbandi or a solo transforms into a balladeer in Aashiyan, his duet with Shreya Ghoshal.

You move on to Neele Neele, hoping that it8217;s an acappella when a chorus opens the track. Newcomer Vijay Prakash shares credits with Ghoshal on this one. It8217;s the perfect score for a film set in Goa8212;the percussion and guitar lines, with a few claps thrown in, instantly pop up an image of a beach party outside a white-fenced cottage.

There are more challenges lined up for Ghoshal in her solo Tu Hai Bhatakta Jugnu Koi. Barot deserves a pat for the intricate voice modulations where Ghoshal perfectly moves between the vocals of Indian playback and Western music. A big thumbs up for lyricist Neelesh Misra too8212;he8217;s balanced the Hinglish with some fine lines in Hindi.

Shaan8217;s Raqs Kar Le could be out of any pop album really, and by the time you get to Tauba a solo by Barot you8217;re weary of the same-sounding tunes. The album could have done with a straight simple tune minus all the jazz.

Impressive arrangements, but an average soundtrack. Worth a listen.
