Uttarayan, Gujarat8217;s annual kite festival, has started attracting crowds from even abroad. Earlier, only NRIs and specifically NRGs Non-Resident Gujaratis, used to be seen flying kites amid a gaggle of revellers. They would time their homecoming around Navratri and Uttarayan. But Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat-Global Investors8217; Summit have started bringing even foreigners. Gujarat also hosts the international kite festival, where specialists from different countries come to Ahmedabad. This time the festivities had a sombre touch because of the tsunami. Still, some participants from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia who put their sorrows behind to keep their date with the festival.

Uneasy heads

Both the major parties in Gujarat are in a state of limbo, with Rajendrasinh Rana and B K Gadhvi8212;the state chiefs of the BJP and Congress respectively8212;living on borrowed time. If Rana has already served a long term, Gadhvi faces opposition from many. The parties look in no hurry to decide on the matter. Assembly elections in other states have further helped delay any move.

Reined in

Even detractors of Narendra Modi agree he keeps bureaucrats on their toes. If they are not preparing for any mega event announced by the CM, Modi makes his bureaucrats take lessons in management. Such is Modi8217;s fear that officials can be seen slogging away on even public holidays or weekends before big events.
