The police made no substantial headway in identifying the terrorists behind the attack on Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus on Wednesday but a few leads have emerged — a few grenades found near the site bore Pakistan markings and the two outfits presently under scanner are the Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. The grenades are being examined and the reported presence of markings could strengthen suspicion on the Lashkar. Grenade markings were an important link in investigations for the attack on Parliament. Besides, intelligence inputs show that the LeT has been considering Bangalore or Hyderabad for its new targets. Officials from Delhi are known to have joined their Karnataka counterparts on the investigations. Investigating agencies are also looking at the possibility of links between Abu Salem’s presence in Bangalore and the timing of the attack.

Police, however, are yet to determine how many terrorists were involved in the attack. Only one weapon – an AK 56 automatic rifle – was used to fire as many as five magazines. Reports reaching the Union Home Ministry from Karnataka say only one person was involved in the firing. There could have been ‘‘others’’ with him outside the hall who helped him get away after the attack. Union Home Secretary VK Duggal said the police would be able to get a clear picture of the number of militants involved only after they speak to Dr Sangeta Patel – the only eyewitness. Duggal said the Home Ministry has advised security around all vital installations including oil refineries, Bombay Stock Exchange,IITs and other economic installations to be beefed up. ‘‘We have asked states to increase security around these places while installations protected by the Centre have been already upgraded,’’ Duggal said.
