A controversy erupted in Karnataka Sunday after a video allegedly showing a senior IPS officer in a compromising situation with a woman inside his office went viral.
The 47-second clip purportedly shows Ramachandra Rao, who currently serves as the Director General of Police (DGP), at the Civil Rights Enforcement Directorate. The video, allegedly filmed in his office, shows an officer in uniform engaging in inappropriate physical contact with a woman during working hours.
Reacting to the video, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that an inquiry will be conducted into the case and disciplinary action will be taken against the DGP. “No high-ranking officer is above the law,” he said.
Soon after the video went viral, Rao went to meet state Home Minister G Parameshwara who is said to have refused to meet the officer.
Speaking about the video, Rao said he was shocked to come to know about the clip only through the media. “It is a fabricated and fake video. I did not have any idea and I will speak to my advocate before initiating legal action. An investigation needs to be conducted on the matter,” he added.
According to police sources, the video was shot around 2017 when Rao was an Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In 2025, Rao had courted controversy when his stepdaughter and Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested in a gold smuggling case. The 1993-batch IPS officer was subsequently sent on compulsory leave following allegations of protocol violation which is said to have allowed Ranya to bypass security checks at the Bengaluru airport prior to her arrest in the case. In August, he was recalled and posted as the DGP. Rao is scheduled to retire in May this year.
