PARIS, MAY 29: Former champions and world number one Steffi Graf and Monica Seles moved into the fourth round of the French Open with identical scorelines after some second-set hiccups today.

The third-seeded Seles took 67 minutes to oust world number 52 Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo of Spain, 6-1, 6-4 and tournament no. six Graf needed 83 minutes for her 6-1, 6-4 victory over 92nd-ranked Swede Asa Carlson.Second seed Lindsay Davenport also moved to quarters. She rallied from 5-2 down in the opening set to a 7-6 7-5, 6-3 victory against world no. 48 Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia.

Seles, who won three straight Roland Garros titles 1990-1992, was at her best in the first set, reeling off five straight games to take the set after just 23 minutes with a volley drop-shot.

However, she was unable to keep up the high standard in the second set as her baseline shots suddenly started falling beyond the lines. She committed 16 errors.

Sanchez-Lorenzo also raised her game and it could have been even tougher for Seleshad Lorenzo held serve for 5-4 after a 40-15 lead. Instead, the Spaniard committed a double fault, added two errors and Seles wrapped up the break with a forehand winner. She took the match in the next game with an overhead shot.

The five-times champion Graf won the opening set against Carlson in identical fashion as Seles, but should have wrapped up the match earlier. However, she squandered two match points leading 5-2, dropped the next two games before finally serving it out in the tenth game.

Davenport also had to overcome some stubborn resistance from Zuluaga, who was making her Roland Garros debut.

The Colombian got an early break en route to a 5-2 lead, but Davenport pulled out all her experience to claw back into the match. She snatched the set in the tie-break, squandered an early break in the second, but won the last three games to advance.

THREE DOWN, FOUR TO GO: After a nervous opening match and tense second, World No 1 Martina Hingis moved into the last 16 with a relaxed 6-3 6-4 win overKveta Hrdlickova.

Booed and whistled off Centre Court on Wednesday after beating Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo in a super-charged contest, Hingis appeared completely at ease as she stepped on to the same court in front of a sparse morning crowd. So relaxed in fact, that the 18-year-old Swiss had trouble getting into the contest, spending far more time than she wanted, 74 minutes, disposing of her 84th ranked Czech opponent.

8220;Three down, four to go,8221; said Hingis, counting wins she needs to claim the one Grand Slam title to elude her. 8220;It was tough match for me but more mentally. The Czech girls react well to what I8217;m doing. Most of the time I win, but it8217;s Still tough mentally.8221;

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi wasted no time in dispatching French pair of J Lisnard and M Llodra to storm into the third round in men8217;s doubles tournament.

The world number two Indian duo needed just 55 minutes to rattle the French hopes winning 6-2 6-4 for a place in the round of16.

The top seeds did not have to stretch in their second round match as they had to in the opening round against Spainish pair of Juan Ignacio Carrasco and Jairo Velasco. The Indians lived up to their reputation as the unseeded Lisnard-Llodra found no counter to Leander8217;s serve and volley game.

Paes-Bhupathi, semifinalist here last year, await the winner of second round tie between South African pair of Lan Bale and Grant Stafford and Piet Norval South Africa and Kevin Ullytt Zimbabwe scheduled later in the day.How the seeds fared
