The Bengaluru police have arrested an obsessive Instagram user from Haryana for allegedly sexually harassing and stalking a city-based fitness and nutrition influencer, officials said on Tuesday.
The police said the accused, Sudhir Kumar, began harassing the woman after following her on Instagram, where she has a large following.
According to investigators, Sudhir initially sent sexually explicit and abusive messages to the victim through Instagram. He later obtained her WhatsApp number and continued sending vulgar and provocative messages, causing severe mental distress.
Despite the woman repeatedly ignoring him, Sudhir allegedly persisted in his harassment. He also travelled from Haryana to Karnataka in an attempt to meet the influencer.
After arriving in Bengaluru, he allegedly visited gyms and approached the woman’s colleagues, enquiring about her whereabouts. Alarmed by his continued stalking, the woman approached the South Division Women’s Police station and filed a complaint.
Based on her complaint, the police booked Sudhir under sections 75 (2) (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking), and 79 (sexual harassment through words, actions, or intrusions that demean a woman’s dignity) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was subsequently tracked down and arrested in Bengaluru.
Lokesh Jagalasar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said, “We have arrested the accused and are further investigating the case. He was sexually harassing the complainant by sending abusive and explicit messages on Instagram, repeatedly trying to contact her, following and stalking her. A case was registered on January 14, and further investigation is underway.”
The police urged victims of online harassment and stalking to report such incidents promptly to prevent escalation.
