Proceedings in the Godhra train carnage and the Communal Riots Inquiry Commission were called off today following the absence of a senior police officer who cited illness as the reason for not appearing for cross- examination.

Joint Commissioner of Police P.P. Pande who was in charge of Vejalpur area in the city during the post-Godhra communal riots and who had filed an affidavit, communicated his absence to the Commission comprising Justice (retd) G.T. Nanavati and Justice (retd) K.G. Shah.

He is the second policeman who cited illness as the reason for remaining absent from the cross-examination following Deputy SP of Railway Police Noel Parmar, who is also the Investigating Officer of the crucial case.

Parmar had initially filed an application saying that he would not want to appear for cross-examination as he was the current Investigating Officer of the case and his statments might affect the Commission’s proceedings. However, after his request was turned down by the Commission he filed another application citing illness as the reason for his absence. The Commission has directed the Government Counsel to ensure that policemen are henceforth present as per schedule. Details of poor investigation and contradiction emerged during the cross-examination of K.C. Bawa, the Deputy SP who first probed the crucial case.
