
Jennifer Capriati pulls out
PARIS: Jennifer Capriati withdrew from the French Open on Wednesday because she failed to recover from an ankle injury, organisers of the tournament said.
Capriati made the semifinals of the French Open in 1990 when she was 14 and the semifinals of Wimbledon and the US Open the following year. Since returning to the circuit last year, Capriati has risen to No 28 in the rankings. She was ranked as high as No. 6 in 1992. Her withdrawal follows that of Boris Becker and Andre Agassi.
Nebiolo re-elected ASOIF president
MONTE CARLO: Italian sports leader Primo Nebiolo was re-elected yesterday for another four-year term as President of the umbrella body of international summer sports federations.
But Nebiolo, 73, failed to receive unanimous backing from the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations ASOIF, which represents the 28 sports in the summer games. Nebiolo, the only candidate for the post, received 21 votes but there were also three votes against him and four abstentions.
Carl Lewis hits out at US authorities
MONTE CARLO: American Carl Lewis, often described as the greatest Olympic athlete of all times, has launched a bitter attack on US track and field8217;s governing body TAC for turning a blind eye to drug abuse.
Reacting to news that 400 metres hurdler Sandra Farmer-Patrick and middle distance runner Mary Slaney had tested positive for testosterene but TAC delayed the findings and the punishment, Lewis said: 8220;There is no question in my mind that they have more knowledge about the drug problem than they are telling the public. In some cases they have overlooked and even tried to protect the athletes.8221;
Cantona seizes cameraman8217;s equipment
GRENOBLE: Newly retired French football star Eric Cantona seized a photographer8217;s car keys and his equipment here yesterday and had to be forced by police to return it later.
According to an eyewitness, Cantona along with a friend, took the photographer8217;s keys and camera equipment after blocking his car near the village of La Beaume where the Frenchman8217;s family owns a house.
The 31-year-old Cantona who quit soccer recently, had refused to be photographed several times during the day.
