Davenport replaces Hingis at number one spotFILDERSTADT: American Lindsay Davenport took over as world number one yesterday when an injured Martina Hingis lost her quarter-final in the Filderstadt Grand Prix.

Hingis8217; 18-month reign ended when she was beaten 3-6, 7-6, 4-6 by world number 12 Dominique Van Roost of Belgium.

Davenport celebrated by winning her quarter-final against Natalie Tauziat of France 7-6 7-5.

Hingis took the loss of her world top spot in her stride. 8220;It8217;s no drama. It8217;s nothing special,8221; she said. 8220;I don8217;t want to deny Davenport the number one spot. She8217;s been playing very well and at the moment she8217;s the one who belongs there.quot;

Ince faces three-match suspension NYON SWITZERLAND: England mid-fielder Paul Ince has been given a three-match international ban after Uefa found him guilty of showing dissent to the referee who sent him off in last month8217;s Euro 2000 qualifier against Sweden.

Ince, already serving an automatic one-match suspension for being red-cardedin England8217;s 2-1 loss in Stockholm, was suspended yesterday for two more games and will not be eligible for England until a return match against Sweden in June.
