Block by block!
This Tuesday saw Fabindia host for the first time an exquisite Block-printing workshop that saw professional craftsman come in from Delhi to display the craft. Also on showcase was the art of gold and silver 8216;Khari8217; work along with a select display of the use of vegetables dyes for printing of motifs and designs on dupattas and saris in traditional fabrics like Chanderi, Maheswari and Kota. Customers were able to choose their own motifs and work out a design of their choice to get block printed. Interestingly, the craft of block-printing is very refined, skillful and exclusive in nature. It can take five carvers up to three days to create an intricate design in a block of teak used for printing. The printers may use up to thirty blocks to create a design. Separate pieces of wood are required for each of the colors used in a design and it is not unusual to have four or five colours in a professional design. On the occasion, a Fabindia official remarked, 8220;In an ongoing effort, we constantly aim to showcase and nurture the ancients crafts of India. The block-printing workshop held at our store today was a step in the direction to showcase a traditional craft to the people of Chandigarh.8221;
