CHANDIGARH, Nov 6: This festival of French films stands testimony to how a dull subject like architecture can be beautifully captured on screen instilling instant interest into viewers.
So the screening of the festival of films on architecture and urbanism , titled aptly quot; The Cityquot;, had a timely event too, as the Alliance Francaise added an auditorium to its building. The inaugural lamp was lit by Alain Dromsom, General Delegate of the Alliance Francaise in India and deputy cultural adviser at the French Embassy. While addressing the gathering, Dromsom pointed out that the Alliance was not for learning the language alone but should be a focal point in strengthening diplomacy and trade. According to him, a French Information Centre for Chandigarh is on the anvil.
quot;Nemausus I: Council Flats of the 80s8221;, made by Richard Copans in 96, dealt with the social housing scheme launched for the economically weaker section in the 80s. The second one, The Railway Station in the Museum8217;, was an interesting account of a strange transformation ever occured in the history of urban architecture. Olivier Horn8217;s piece on the Charlety Stadium in Paris wound up the inaugural screening. Shaped like a ship8217;s prow, the stadium was for Henri Gaudin, its architect, a symbol of both fullness and emptiness of architecture.
8220;I draw skeletons of animals to show that everything has a space and is related to each other.8221; And Horn8217;s camera succeeded in showing us the connection between that skeleton and the building8217;s basic structure which, like the flesh in the animals, was filled up by the various sections of the stadium.
