• Your editorial, ‘Securing India’ (IE, November 1), has rightly indicated how “the Tony Blair government was that it would not rest until it systematically got to the bottom of the entire episode and dug out the origins, methodology and purpose of the perpetrators”. Can India persuade Pakistan government to take action against terrorist networks operating on its territory? If both India and Pakistan are sincere about improving their relationship then why don’t both nations join hands to strike at the den of terrorists across the border? Mere sympathy from the Pakistan cannot heal the wounds of the Delhi blasts. The country wants death to terrorism. — Bidyut K. Chatterjee Faridabad Black Saturday • The unprovoked and cowardly act of bombing Delhi is not only shocking but most deplorable. I don’t know which faith the perpetrators of this heinous crime subscribe to, or what reason they have for their cowardice, the fact is that they are worst type of criminals and need to be brought to book. — Uzma Naheed Mumbai Dhoni’s fitness • No word of praise is enough for the innings that Mahendra Singh Dhoni played against the Lankans at Jaipur. But Team India should not be looking to make him a regular at the No 3 slot of the batting order right away. This is because Dhoni is not the best wicket-keeper around, neither is he the fittest of cricketers, as yet. Team India can ill afford to pay the price for keeping wickets by means of his batting prowess. It is extremely taxing to keep wickets for 50 overs and then come to bat at the fall of the first wicket. This also applies when the team bats first. With the Indian batting order packed with top-class batsmen, even when the likes of Mohammad Kaif and Sourav Ganguly are not there, Dhoni can come later in the order, except say, while chasing a big total, as was the case at Jaipur. Dhoni batted with a runner for a long part of the Indian innings at Jaipur, when air temperature an humidity were not at their intolerable worst at the venue. Earlier in the year he had to temporarily retire due to dehydration in the P. Sen Trophy final at Eden Gardens. Had he been as fit as Adam Gilchrist or, Rahul Dravid, for that matter, he should have been a permanent at the one-down position by now. It is up to the Team India support staff to take his fitness fast to the highest level. — Arjun Chaudhuri Kolkata Right, Justice • Chief Justice Lahoti has hit the nail on the head when he opined that the government has no political will to tackle terrorism. The truth is that many parties and their leaders bank on Muslim votes in this country. They are under the wrong impression that, in case they take stern action against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, they will stand to lose Muslim votes. No wonder Pakistan is taking advantage of this weakness of our political leaders. — H. Parasuram Mumbai No way • On October 29, terrorists have made merciless attacks on our national capital. Pakistan has been sponsoring anti-Indian terrorism over the last 20 years. Under such nasty circumstances, why should India be merciful, kind hearted and generous and help the quake-hit Pakistanis? Why? For the Nobel Prize for peace? No way. — Hansraj Bhat Mumbai
