Express editor8217;s attacker sent to judicial custody

PUNE, MAY 16: Jayashri Inamdar, arrested by the Cantonment police on the charge of attacking the editor of The Indian Express, Pune, Prakash Kardaley, was on Tuesday remanded to judicial custody till May 30 by Judicial Magistrate First Class V V Kankanwadi.

Acting on an application moved by defence counsel D V Bhusari, the magistrate also directed that Jayashri Inamdar be kept under observation at the asylum at Yerawada.

In her order, the magistrate has directed the asylum authorities to submit their report on or before May 26. The order also stated that it was not issued under Section 20 of the Mental Health Act.

Jayashri Inamdar was produced before the magistrate by Assistant Police Inspector Devidas Patil this afternoon together with a report requesting the magistrate to extend her police custody by seven days.

Assistant Public Prosecutor A A Jaybhay submitted before the court that the police were yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack and that work of recording statements of witnesses was still on.

While pleading that Jayashri Inamdar be remanded to judicial custody, Bhusari pointed out that the police had sought her custody on the same grounds earlier. He claimed that there had been no progress in the investigations.

Later, Bhusari moved a fresh application claiming that Jayashri was mentally ill. He requested the court to send her to the asylum at Yerawada for acheck-up.

The application stated that Jayashri Inamdar was undergoing treatment since 1992 but the treatment was stopped abruptly. The application claimed that her condition deteriorated after the treatment was stopped. The court was, therefore, being requested to send her to the asylum so that she could be kept under observation.

The application requested the court to call for the report of the asylum authorities on Jayashri8217;s condition. According to the application, her condition was likely to get out of control if she was not given proper treatment immediately. The defence counsel also submitted a medical certificate along with the application.
