After 14 years in medicine, Kavita Kareer decided to follow her heart and take up interior designing and also work for underprivileged children

She has been giving just the right dosage of drug required for anaesthesia during the 14-year-long career as anesthetist at Sasoon Hospital. And now she knows just the perfect piece of furniture that needs to be placed in a corner to elevate its appeal in a home. Moreover, Kavita Kareer, a doctor turned interior designer, also has a soft corner for deprived children.

8220;Calling a well established career a day and starting with another at this stage was a tough decision for me to take. However, my family gave me strong support and encouraged me when I told them that after all these years, I would like to follow my heart,8221; says Kareer, wife to Nitin Kareer, divisional commissioner, Pune.

Her association with Sassoon is not entirely a thing of the past though, as she continues to be a part of the orphanage, Sreevatsa, run by the Society and Friends of Sassoon Hospital SOFOSH. 8220;While working in Sasoon I use to give limited time to these children, but now I not only give time but also employ my art as a tool to help them,8221; says Kareer, who would exhibits her creations of fabric art for raising fund for Sreevatsa from today at Residency Club.

8220;Last year also I organised for an exhibition, Ehsaas, and the fund went to Tara, an organisation run by SOFOSH for mentally and physically challenged children. Children of Sreevatsa will inaugurate today8217;s exhibition,8221; she adds.

Talking about her newfound passion, that is, interior designing, she says that she is enjoying every bit of it. 8220;Finally I am able to express my creativity. Designing my own home was my first assignment and this brought me a couple of more projects which were well appreciated.8221;

When asked about the sudden change of career, she says that both her parents were doctors and she took up medicine despite having a flair for designing. But now that her children have grown up she took up a course in interior designing. Guess it8217;s all about following your heart.
