SURAT, May 7: Two persons died of gastro-enteritis and six others were taken ill in the Bhagar Falia area of Navsari amid allegations that the Navsari municipality was doing little to tackle the disease.
Residents warned that the disease could take epidemic proportions if the civic body did not take steps immediately.
Doctors at the Navsari New Civil, where four of the ailing persons were admitted, however, said that though there were cases of gastro-enteritis, most were related to consumption of spurious liquor and not contaminated water.
Although the Ghalkhadi area of the city was the worst affected by gastro fever, cases have been reported from other areas as well.
The two deceased were identified as Babliben Naika 40 and Minaben Naika 12. While Minaben died in the hospital, Babliben expired in her house, the doctors at the hospital said. Among those admitted for treatment at the hospital are Khapabhai Naika, Manishaben, Mukesh and Sanjay, all from the same area.
Nagarpalika officials have reportedly begun sprinkling DDT and other disinfectants in the affected areas even as local MLA manbhai Patel has expressed grief at the deaths, asking the officials to take quick measures.Taluka level officials are also making rounds of the city and its adjoining areas.
