PUNE, June 10: Chairman of the Tata Consultancy Services F C Kohli emphasised the need to develop design engineering capability at higher level and make effective use of the engineering capacity which is surplus in India to increase the share of the Indian software products in the global market.

Kohli was speaking at the valedictory session 8220;Update8217;99,8221; the two-day technical conference organised by Software Technology Parks of India STPI. Kohli felt that the Indian industry had proved its skills and it was now time to develop not only software and to encourage software export oriented units but also to encourage software companies to develop products to meet society8217;s requirements in education and primary health area. Combination of export and domestic market oriented industry will help improving quality, sharing skills and manpower.

Kohli presented the national award to the Bangalore-based Wipro Limited for achieving excellence in software. The award has been instituted by STPI. The other companies to get state awards include Satyam Computers, Hyderabad, NIIT, Delhi, Solmac Machines Pvt Ltd, Gandhinagar. Hughes Software Systems, Gurgaon, Wipro Ltd, Bangalore, Network Systems and Technology, Thiruvanathapuram, Mahindra British Telecom, Pune, Policy Management System, Indore, Infosys Technologies, Bhubhaneshwar, Pentafour Software and Exports Ltd, Chennai, HCL Perot Systems, Noida and Cognizant Technologies, Calcutta.
