Elephants run amok, kill 8

A pair of domestic elephants ran amok on Tuesday killing eight persons, including five women, in Cachar district of southern Assam before they were shot in adjoining Kolasib district of Mizoram.

A pair of domestic elephants ran amok on Tuesday killing eight persons, including five women, in Cachar district of southern Assam before they were shot in adjoining Kolasib district of Mizoram.

Cachar Additional Deputy Commissioner Dinabandhu Deka said the elephants went out of control on Tuesday. 8220;They first entered Baghewala village and trampled one a 50-year-old man to death. They then ran through Kulichar, Singuwa, Amraghat and Tulertop villages killing at least six more persons,8221; Deka said over the telephone from Dholai.

The two elephants then crossed over to Kolasib district in Mizoram and after destroying some houses killed a man. 8220;They entered into our territory in the evening, trampled a person to death and destroyed several houses, following which we alerted the Forest Department, which declared them as rogues and fit for killing,8221; Kolasib Deputy Commissioner Dawngliana said. He said the elephants were shot dead by the Mizoram Armed Police around 4 am on Wednesday about 15 km from Vairangte town.

Sahabuddin and Rukunuddin who own the elephants are now on the run to evade arrest.
