
Educational institutes across the country would soon be able to take up collective researches and share resources with each other. 8220;The government has accepted the National Knowledge Commission8217;s recommendation of interconnecting all knowledge institutions through a digital broadband network to encourage sharing of resources and collaborative research,8221; said President Pratibha Patil after presenting the National Awards to teachers.
The National Knowledge Network, which will interconnect all universities, libraries, laboratories, and eventually also hospitals and agricultural institutions enabling nationwide sharing of data and resources, is in its final stages of completion. An allocation of Rs 100 crore towards this 15-GB network has already been made in the 2008-09 budget.
The President also launched a national portal for teachers, teachersofindia.org, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Developed by the Azim Premji Foundation with support from the National Knowledge Commission, the portal will offer a platform for discussion to the teaching community. The portal will also offer content in several languages and provide access to students, parents, teacher educators, etc.
8220;Information and Communication Technologies ICT is all set to change the teaching-learning scenario in our schools. Increasing use of communicative media, especially the computer and the television, will create an interactive environment in both schools and homes. This would require a shift from the competitive and individual learning to co-operative and collaborative learning. The classroom of tomorrow will be marked by collaboration, constructivism, exploration and problem solving,8221; said Patil.
The President called on the teachers8217; community to show greater professionalism, commitment and dedication to transform the education system.
