NEW DELHI, NOV 2: S C Jain, member of the Law Commission is emerging as the frontrunner for the vacant Election Commissioner8217;s slot in the three-member body.

The retirement of the Commission member G V G Krishnamurty on September 30, has thrown up a chance for the BJP-led government to appoint their man for the job, and a number of names have been doing the rounds.

Amidst accusations by the BJP, that the EC had not played completely fair during the general elections, the ruling party will want to name a BJP-friendly incumbent to the high-profile job. Another Law Commission member, N M Ghatate8217;s name has also come up, though his age will go against him. Ghatate, who is believed to be close to PM Vajpayee, is in his early sixties and would only have a few months to go, since the EC has an age limit of 65 years. Yet another name that could be considered is that of Raghubir Singh, Secretary of the Legislative Department, in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. But Singh hails from Punjab, whichcould be a disqualifier since Gill also belongs to the same state and it wouldn8217;t do to have two members from the same state.

Since Krishnamurty was a lawyer by training, familiar with the nitty-gritties of constitutional law.
