MUMBAI, June 15: Close on the heels of the double murder in Navi Mumbai last week, two women were found murdered at Nhava Sheva in the satellite township on Sunday morning. Their bodies lay in a pool of blood, with throats slit open and minor cuts at various places.

Police are still clueless about the identity of the assailants, but they claimed investigations are on and the case is being examined from all angles. When Shanker Tandel, a fireman with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, returned home from his night duty at around 7.30 am on Sunday, he found the door of his house open and his wife Josna (21) and her cousin Chanda (17) lying in a pool of blood, their throats slit open. Shanker’s one-year-old son lay asleep near the bodies.

Police said prima facie evidence suggested the two women were raped before being killed. But there were no signs of forced entry, and it is possible the assailants were known to Josna and Chanda, they informed. Valuables worth Rs 70,000 were reported missing, investigationshave revealed.

Navi Mumbai police commissioner Sudhakar Ambedkar said it was strange that nobody noticed the two bodies earlier, although the door of the house was open. Police aren’t ruling out personal animosity as a motive behind the murder, he added. However, he said that there was no link between these murders and the Vashi double murder. “The motive in the Vashi double murder was material gain. But the motive behind this double murder seems to be different,” he pointed out.
