MUMBAI, March 25: Normalcy has been restored in Mumbai port after a settlement was reached between the striking dock workers8217; union and a transport company early this morning.
Operations in Mumbai docks had come to a virtual standstill after dock workers, under the banner of Transport and Dock Workers8217; Federation, struck work on March 19. They were protesting against the victimisation of four fellow-workers.
The dock workers took to agitation when M/s Kasturi Transport withdrew their fleet to trucks plying in Mumbai docks and redeployed the same to Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, across the harbour. The transport company allegedly took the decision notwithstanding the fact that volume of work in the city8217;s dock was high as they had signed contracts with five shipping lines operating from the harbour.
According to representatives of the worker8217;s union, matters came to the head when the transport company sub-contracted the work. This has resulted in displacement of four dock workers with their wagesand incentives slashed, workers added.
