CAPE CANAVERAL, MAY 29: The space shuttle Discovery made a picture-perfect docking today with the fledgling international space station four seconds ahead of schedule.

Discovery eased into the docking with the two-module space station, which is nearly ready for a crew to take up residence there early next year, and the crew made preparations to deliver two construction cranes and 1,630 kg of supplies for scientific experiments.

The four men and three women piloting Discovery brought with them only supplies considered essential to scientific and technical work in and on the space station and to the giant construction site they are positioning in space. Among these supplies are a lap-top computer, a printer, cameras, tools, replacement parts, and clothing for crew members who will live and work in the station.

The shuttle will remain docked to the station for six days, during which time the astronauts will unhurriedly transport supplies from Discovery to the station.
