MUMBAI, August 10: Over 500 employees of the first ever textile mill in Thane, Kiran Spinning Mill, today staged a day long dharna in front of the Thane District Collectorate to press for their demands to restart the unit.

The dharna was led by president of the Mahanagar Kamghar Union (MKU) Sharad Khatu and Thane unit vice president Harishchandra Narkar. A delegation of the workers met the District Collector Srikant Singh and submitted a memorandum. The DC is reported to have assured the workers that he would put up their case before the state government.

The premier mill employed over 2,500 workers when the management closed following a dispute with the workers’ union it in 1983.
