CHANDIGARH, Sept 24: Dev Samaj College of Education for Women, Chandigarh, outplayed Chandigarh College of Architecture, Chandigarh, 23-14, to win the title in the Panjab University Inter-College basketball B8217; division women8217;s championship held at the PU Campus today.

Seema led the Dev Samaj attack with 15 points while Rupinder contributed six points to the score. Shivani Guglani and Amrit Monga scored eight and six points respectively for the losers.

PU Campus qualify PANJAB University Campus made inroads into the inter-zonal league stage of the PU Inter-College women8217;s basketball A8217; division tournament slated to be held at PU Campus from October 3 and 4. In the qualifying round today, they got the better of Government College for Girls, Sector 11, 52-24. The eventual winners had a massive lead at the break 33-8.

In the second session, the Campus hoopsters slackened their pace which gave GCG-11 cagers a chance to bridge the gap but the initial lead proved too much.

Shivani Gupta netted 18 points while Kiranjit Dhillon scored 17 points for the winners. Sunita 8 and Monika 6 were the main scorers for GCG-11.

Abhishek shines
Abhishek Sahai maybe only 13 years of age but his martial art career is already nine years. As a reward of his progress, he has been awarded the second Black Belt Ni-Dan in karate, thus becoming the youngest Indian boy to do so.

A student of St John8217;s School here, Abhishek has undergone rigorous training in advanced Shotokan-Karate-Do. He has also cleared various examinations on the said pattern. A video film on his performance, titled 8220;Techniques based on Oriental Martial Art Weapon8221; was also released today at the YMCA, Sector 11 Karate Centre.

His guide P Raghavan feels that with the dedication that Abhishek has shown, he would bag many more awards like this.

NPS-18 in semis
New Public School, Sector 18 entered the semifinal of The inter-School table tennis tournament under-17 beating Manav Mangal School, Sector 21 2-1.

Scores: NPS bt Manav Mangal 2-1: Manindra NPS lost to Nishant 9-21, 15-21; Neeraj Chaudhary NPS bt Achint 21-6, 21-16, 21-11; Neeraj and Sachin bt Achint and Nishant 21-10, 22-24.

However, Manav Mangal School made it to the under-14 category final in which they will take on Bhavan Vidyalaya-27. Manav Mangal School beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20 2-1 while Bhavan Vidyalaya beat DAV Public School, Sector 8.

Baseball trials
Trials to select the Chandigarh probables, including girls, for coaching camp in preparation for the 10th National Junior Baseball Championships under-17 to be held here, will be conducted on September 27 at Government College for Men, Sector 11, according to Baseball Association Chandigarh president Pius Pandarwani.

Players born after September 30, 1981 will be eligible for trials. They should bring the proof of their date of birth.
