Service doctors to stage dharna on Monday

February 8: Over 11,000 service doctors working for the Central Government8217;s health care services all over the country have launched an agitation in protest against what they call the Government8217;s efforts to dilute the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations. They said that the recommendations were meant for them.

At a meeting of the steering committee of service doctors held here yesterday, the doctors from various states have decided to take out a rally in Delhi, followed by a dharna at Nirman Bhawan on Monday, to press their demands for a complete implementation of the report.

The recommendations like the payment of 25 per cent of basic pay as non-practising allowance NPA for all serving doctors, research pursuit allowance, telephone and newspapers allowance and conveyance and PG allowance, which are meant specifically for the doctors have not been taken up for implementation, they said.

Anna Hazare, Indira Jaisingh gets Rotary award

Socialactivist Anna Hazare, chairman of the Lok Sevak Sangh S.D. Sharma, senior advocate Indira Jaisingh and the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan Rajasthan have been selected for the Rotary Manav Seva Awards, 1998, for Crusade Against Corruption8217;. The Rotary Awards for Service to Humanity India Trust and S.J. Jindal Trust will carry a cheque for Rs 200,000 each with a citation.

East Pak Displaced Persons8217; Association protest rally

The East Pakistan Displaced Persons8217; Association will hold a protest rally and hunger strike from February 8 to draw the attention of the authorities towards the Municipal Council of Delhi8217;s MCD move to evict the association office from Chittaranjan Park.

In a statement, association president Jyotirindra Chakbaborty said the MCD had threatened to evict them from the park.

The move, however, was ultimately stayed by the Delhi High Court. There was also an attempt to burn down the office recently in which event office furniture, records and office equipment weredestroyed. He said that the association should be provided with protection.

Baby beauty contest

A beauty contest is being orgainsed for babies under four years of age. The preliminary round will be held at Fun-n-food Village from April 10 to 12, says Ashim Khetrapal of Radiant Sports and Entertainment, the company promoting the event.

IMA office-bearers elected

The following office-bearers have been elected for the Delhi branch of the Indian Medical Association for the year 1988-99: Rajiv Garg: president, D.D. Singhi: president-elect, I.P.S. Kalra: vice- president, Usha Sabherwal: secretary, D.R. Jangid: joint secretary, Ajay Kanojia: treasurer, J.J. Sood: editor and Mohan Bhargav, S.K. Jain, Dinesh Kumar, N.K. Gupta, Tarun Gupta and Manjot Kalra: executive members.
