EC not to intervene in AIIMS row

  • The election commission has reportedly refused to intervene in the ongoing row over lateral entry appointments at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS. Sources said on Tuesday that the Governing Body meeting will be held on Wednesday, as scheduled, to decide on the controversial direct appointments on middle-level faculty posts, which are usually filled up through promotions. The institute, sources maintained, was losing Rs one lakh on each eleventh hour postponement of the GB meeting, which was earlier scheduled for December 24.
  • 51 donate their bodies

  • Leaving a ray of hope for the disabled and seriously ill patients, 51 people willed their body organs to be donated after their death. The donation was done at a function organised by the Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti on Monday, which was presided over by Delhi Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and MLA and Samiti president Alok Kumar. The donors include a journalist, engineers, scientists, doctors and social workers.
  • Health institute employees agitation

  • The employees of the Union government8217;s National Institute of Health and Family Welfare NIHFW have launched an agitation in protest against the authorities8217; refusal to increase their salaries according to the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations, despite their being a government institute.
  • In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the institute8217;s staff association said their director had been constantly ignoring the government notifications in an attempt to harass the employees, who were not given the first installment of arrears on Diwali, which all government employees were given.

    Hitkari employees sit in dharna

  • More than 1,000 workers of Hitkari Potteries Limited have lost their jobs as the factory has been locked since early this month. Protesting against the lock out of the factory and the failure of the district administration in solving their problems, the workers have been sitting in dharna since the lock out on January 2.
  • Criticising the factory management, District INTUC President and former MLA Yogesh Sharma said not only had the management snatched the bread from the workers, but it also not paid their salaries for the past six months. Sharma lambasted the district administration for not giving a hearing to the poor workers.

    He said the administration had failed in solving the problem. quot;It must take a serious step in this connection otherwise workers of the district would go for a combine agitation,quot; Sharma added.
