
GRP constable remanded to custody
One of the five Government Railway Police GRP personnel allegedly responsible for the death of Sanjay Badgujar in custody on April 12 was arrested this morning.
Police sources said constable A Loankar was remanded to police custody. The involvement of the other four accused is also being investigated by senior officials, sources added.
The arrest comes after Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde declared in the Legislative Assembly yesterday that prima facie evidence suggested Badgujar died after the assault in police custody. The officials responsible for his death would be booked under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, Munde said.
Badgujar was arrested by GRP officials attached to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus on April 7 following a passenger8217;s complaint, and was remanded to police custody for seven days. However, he fell unconscious on April 8, apparently due to beating, and succumbed to his injuries at St George Hospital the same day.
Traderrobbed of Rs 9 lakh
A Nagpada businessman was robbed of Rs 9 lakh by four unidentified armed dacoits who escaped with his money bag on Thursday.
The incident occurred at Nagpada around 10 am, just outside the main gate of the municipal workshop on the busy R H Nemkar Marg, police said.
Harish Shantaram Choudhary was heading towards Zavari Bazar in a taxi to deposit cash in a bank when four dacoits on two motorcycles followed him, according to sub-inspector Ashok Bharthi.
When the taxi slowed down, the two bikes came alongside and the attackers whipped out choppers and revolvers to threaten the victim, added Bharthi.One of them who was seated on the pillion, grabbed the bag containing cash and the foursome quickly disappeared from the scene of the crime.
A manhunt to nab the suspects so far has proved futile.
