CHANDIGARH, Aug 12: Local Congressmen today highlighted the role played by the Congress in the development of India, at a seminar organised by the Chandigarh Territorial Congress, at Panchayat Bhawan, here today.

Former president of the Haryana Congress and former Governor, Sultan Singh, was the chief guest, while CTCC president Pawan Kumar Bansal presided over the function.

Speaking at the seminar on “Role of Congress in Building Modern India”, Sultan Singh said it was the Congress that had united India.

Pawan Kumar Bansal lauded the time-tested foreign policy enunciated by the Congress since the time of Nehru, which placed India at a high pedestal among various nations. He also highlighted the vision of Nehru in giving the concept of non-aligned movement to the world.

Punjab’s former Advocate-General Gopal Krishan Chatrath said the Congress had taken the nation in the right direction by establishing a secular, democratic and socialist India. He also lauded the efforts of the Congress in strengthening the institutes of legislature, executive, judiciary and the media.

Onkar Chand, secretary of the Servants of People Society, said the Congress should follow Gandhi’s philosophy by treating the village as a unit of development.

Ram Parkash, meanwhile, criticised the BJP for opposing the far-sighted policies of secularism, non-alignment and planned and mixed economy concept which was enunciated by the Congress. He also lauded the role of Congress in bringing the country on the path of self-reliance and prosperity.
