Providence smiled on India as its women8217;s 4X400m relay team grabbed the silver medal. The Jamaicans were leading when they dropped the baton on the second exchange helping India move up to third place.The joy doubled up for the Indian quartet when first place finishers England were disqualified for not maintaining their order, resulting in India8217;s elevation.

A spirited Indian effort went in vain as hosts Australia today snatched a narrow 1-0 win in the final to bag the gold in women8217;s hockey event. A late goal by skipper Nicole Hudson enabled the hosts to dethrone reigning champions India, who had to be satisfied with the silver. PTI
